On what was supposed to be the most glorious day of her life, turned into tragedy in an instant due to a shooting incident. A mother in the Bronx received devastating news while celebrating her achievement of earning a doctoral degree – her 17-year-old daughter was critically injured after being hit in the head by a stray bullet during a community basketball game.
According to the New York Post, the mother, Jennifer Talbot, had recently obtained a doctoral degree in mental health from the Heart Bible International University. She felt immensely proud and described it as the “greatest achievement” of her life. However, as she was on her way to Connecticut to attend her graduation ceremony, she received a phone call informing her that her daughter had been struck in the face by a bullet near Haffen Park in the Baychester community of the Bronx.
When Talbot arrived at the hospital, she saw her daughter lying in bed, barely conscious, with a breathing tube inserted and part of her head shaved, with a bullet still in her eye. Her head was swollen twice its usual size, and everything immediately turned into a nightmare. That day, her daughter had called her seven times asking about the commencement ceremony, to which Talbot responded, “You really should come.”
Authorities revealed that the shooting occurred last Saturday evening around 5:30 p.m., during a shootout related to gang disputes at the basketball court, resulting in five people being shot: a 32-year-old man was killed, and three others were injured, including Talbot’s daughter, 17-year-old Anthonaya Campbell. It was reported that Campbell, who was just an innocent bystander at the time of the incident, unfortunately ended up being hit in the head by the bullet.
Police confirmed that four suspects have been arrested in connection with the case, aged 16, 17, 20, and 25, all of whom were found in possession of firearms at the scene. The case is still under investigation, and formal charges have not yet been filed.
