Dozens Trapped as Two Landslides Hit Dafang County, Guizhou

On May 22, two landslides occurred consecutively in Changshi Town and Guowa Township, Dafang County, Guizhou Province. According to officials, it is preliminarily estimated that more than ten people from six buildings and eight households are trapped.

According to Xinhua News Agency, landslides took place in Changshi Town and Qingyang Village, Guowa Township, Dafang County at around 3 a.m. and 9 a.m. on May 22. Two people were trapped in Changshi Town, and multiple individuals were trapped in Guowa Township. Relevant departments have initially estimated that more than ten people from six buildings and eight households are trapped.

A villager named Li from Qingyang Village, Guowa Township, told Guangming Online that there was rain in the local area last night, which continued until around 7 a.m. today. The landslide resulted in multiple households in the village being trapped, including her relatives.

Li mentioned that the landslide area has been sealed off, and there is a power outage in the area.

Two residents of Qingyang Village who are currently away left comments on a video platform, saying, “Right opposite my home, seven households, the chance of survival is very slim.” “In our village, we hope those people are safe. Several families living below did not move to our area because the location below is too dangerous.”

A resident named Zhen told Beijing News “Our Video” that from the night of the 21st to the morning of the 22nd, there was continuous rainfall, and even hail fell. Water rushed down from the mountain, leading to the landslide. An acquaintance living in Changshi Town informed her that the landslide had washed away residential houses, and currently, residents are being relocated to the government office.

Reportedly, the landslide occurred in Xinjian Village, Changshi Town. As of 11:20 a.m. on the 22nd, the trapped individuals had not been rescued.

Currently, the local Emergency Management Department has initiated a level four national geological disaster emergency response.
