The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced plans to reduce wait times for in-person visits by shifting many services online. With over 90% of services now accessible through mobile phones or computers, the need for individuals to physically go to DMV offices is significantly reduced. Starting on June 3rd, DMV offices will no longer handle routine transactions, potentially saving around 2.4 million visits to offices annually.
From now on, services that can be completed online include simple vehicle registration renewals, most driver’s license renewals, obtaining copies of vehicle registration with owner details, getting driver’s license copies with driving history, and replacing lost or stolen driver’s licenses and identification cards.
Additionally, DMV has adjusted the operating hours of 20 statewide offices. Starting from July 1st, these offices will only be open to the public for 2 to 3 days per week.
DMV Director Steve Gordon highlighted the operational improvements, stating, “This will save your time and also save time for others. We have also shortened the waiting time for receiving vehicle registration stickers and licenses. In most cases, individuals can receive them within two weeks.”
However, certain transactions still require an in-person visit, such as applying for a Real ID. DMV encourages applicants to fill out information online first before going to the office for photo and fingerprinting sessions.
For individuals uncomfortable with online services but needing to pay registration fees, there are convenient alternatives to update vehicle registration.
Since 2010, DMV has introduced Self-Service Terminals (SST), which have expanded to numerous locations. In addition to dozens of offices offering self-service terminals, many supermarkets, retailers, and other establishments in Southern California have established Self-Service Kiosks.
Individuals can bring their received vehicle registration renewal notices to these kiosks, scan the Renewal Identification Number (RIN) as indicated, choose a payment method, and instantly receive a new registration card and sticker.
