Director Nolan highly praises: “Dune: Part Two” is a miracle.

In recent news about the science fiction film “Dune: Part Two”, renowned director Christopher Nolan, often called a “god-tier director”, has given high praise. He expressed his astonishment and admiration for the movie during a post-screening discussion, calling it a “miracle” and “an outstanding masterpiece.”

According to reports from U.S. media outlets such as Deadline Hollywood and Variety, Nolan recently attended a post-screening event for “Dune: Part Two” upon invitation. During the event, he engaged in an in-depth conversation with director Denis Villeneuve.

Having won an Oscar for Best Director with “Oppenheimer” last year, Nolan highly commended the sequel to “Dune” and even compared it to his favorite “Star Wars” film, “Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back.” He remarked that “Dune: Part Two” is akin to the latter in its brilliant expansion of the groundwork laid by the first film.

“Dune: Part Two” continues the story from its predecessor, focusing on Paul Atreides (portrayed by Timothée Chalamet) as he seeks revenge alongside Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen against those responsible for destroying his family. Paul, the son of a duke, witnesses his family’s massacre by the Harkonnen family upon arriving at the planet Arrakis, leaving him without a father, friends, or mentor, with only his mother Jessica (played by Rebecca Ferguson) surviving by his side. With Chani’s help, he overcomes fear, gains the respect of the Fremen people, and now bears the responsibility of defending his lineage and Arrakis.

Many fans have praised “Dune: Part Two” for its grand scenes, compelling soundtrack, and riveting storyline. This $190 million investment in the film eventually reaped $714 million at the box office.

Nolan was particularly impressed by the rich details in “Dune: Part Two”, stating, “I was completely immersed in this world, with many unique visuals that felt unprecedented, and I was amazed by those details.”

Regarding Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of Paul Atreides, affectionately dubbed “sweet tea,” Nolan joked with Villeneuve, asking how many damn names one character needs—from Usul, Muad’Dib, Paul, to Lisan al Gaib—wondering if the audience can keep up with them.

After the banter, Nolan commended Villeneuve’s adaptation skills for this sci-fi epic, mentioning how most adaptations involve condensing and simplifying, but in the case of these two films, particularly the second, he felt that the exploration and deep excavation of the original work’s complexity had led to the construction of a worldview beyond the source material.

Nolan emphasized that in the latter half of “Dune: Part Two”, Villeneuve creates an incredible climax for the story, calling it nothing short of a miracle.

In a previous interview with Total Film, director Villeneuve expressed that the film “Dune: Part Two” is even more heart-wrenching than the original source material. In preparation for the forthcoming “Dune” third installment, Villeneuve believes the film’s direction and conclusion of “Dune 2” are sadder than the novel.

Interestingly, from the ending of “Dune: Part Two,” most viewers might anticipate that the focus of the subsequent story will revolve around Paul’s holy war, depicting his triumph over other major houses to establish complete control over the empire. However, in the original “Dune Messiah” novel, the story directly jumps 12 years ahead from where Paul has already vanquished numerous enemies.

Director Villeneuve previously revealed in an interview with Total Film that to set the stage for the next installment, the storyline and conclusion of “Dune: Part Two” are more heart-wrenching than the original source material.
