Differences in Statements by Trump and Xi Jinping in Phone Call

On November 25, 2025, it was reported that a phone call took place between the U.S. President, Donald Trump (Trump), and the Chinese Communist Party leader, Xi Jinping, on Monday, November 24. According to statements released by both the U.S. and China, Trump and Xi discussed the issue of Ukraine, although there were discrepancies in their respective statements.

Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to post about the call, stating that he had a very good conversation with Xi Jinping. “We discussed many issues, including Ukraine/Russia, fentanyl, soybeans, and other agricultural products,” Trump wrote in his post.

“We have reached a good and very important agreement for our great farmers, and the situation will only get better,” the President remarked.

Regarding the call, Trump explained that three weeks ago, he had a very successful meeting with Xi Jinping in South Korea. This call was a follow-up to that meeting.

Since then, both sides have made significant progress in maintaining timely updates and accuracy of agreements. “Now we can focus on the bigger picture. For this reason, Chairman Xi Jinping has invited me to visit Beijing in April of [next year], and I have accepted the invitation, inviting him to visit the United States later next year in a state visit,” Trump stated.

“We both agree that maintaining constant communication is important,” he added.

According to a statement released by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Xi Jinping mentioned that since the meeting in Busan last month, overall stability in U.S.-China relations has been improving. Both parties aim to maintain this momentum and open up new avenues for cooperation. Xi Jinping also touched on the Taiwan issue, a point not included in Trump’s statement.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry statement clarified China’s principled position on the Taiwan issue, emphasizing that Taiwan’s return to China is an integral part of the post-World War II international order. The statement further suggested that the United States and China should jointly safeguard the outcomes of the Second World War.

The statement also mentioned that the two leaders discussed the crisis in Ukraine. Xi Jinping emphasized China’s support for all efforts towards peace, hoping that all parties can narrow their differences and reach a fair, enduring, and binding peace agreement to resolve the crisis at its root.

Despite never having ruled Taiwan, China has consistently declared its intention to bring Taiwan under its control, including not ruling out the use of force to achieve this. The United States has consistently opposed any unilateral actions that disrupt the regional status quo. To ensure Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities, the United States places great importance on arms sales to Taiwan, a point that has sparked discontent from China and has been a long-standing point of contention between the U.S. and China.

The Chinese statement did not mention Trump’s visit to China or Xi Jinping’s visit to the U.S., nor did it address issues related to combating fentanyl or purchasing American soybeans and other agricultural products.

The call between Trump and Xi Jinping occurred as U.S. and Ukrainian teams were holding talks in Geneva, Switzerland. Both sides have drafted an updated and improved peace framework. The U.S. has been hoping for China to exert pressure on Russia to end the nearly four-year-long conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
