Dermatologist: Three Terrible Skincare Mistakes

Dr. Azadeh Shirazi, a dermatologist in Southern California, frequently encounters three common skincare mistakes among her patients. These include overusing skincare products, neglecting sun protection, and blindly following skincare routines of friends, even if those methods may not be suitable for their own skin.

In a recent report by the New York Post, Dr. Shirazi shared her insights on common skincare errors and drew on her medical expertise in the field of skincare. She expressed her frustration in a video posted on social media, stating, “I often see patients making these mistakes.”

According to Dr. Shirazi, there are three essential products everyone should use: cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. She suggested adding an additional step between cleansing and moisturizing for those dealing with acne or seeking anti-aging benefits.

Renowned cosmetic chemist Ron Robinson compared the skin barrier to a “shield” in its role of neutralizing pollutants, allergens, and irritants – rendering them harmless. Robinson, interviewed by The New York Times last year, explained that each ingredient applied to the skin poses a threat to this barrier, potentially causing redness, dryness, acne, and other issues.

Dr. Shirazi emphasized the importance of sunscreen, echoing the stance of skincare experts. She underscored the vulnerability of the skin to sun damage, urging for proper attention to sun protection measures.

Drawing from her experience as a dermatologist, Dr. Shirazi mentioned performing numerous skin cancer surgeries, with cancerous tissue commonly found on areas frequently exposed to sunlight, such as eyelids, lips, ears, neck, chest, and backs of hands. Skin cancer is reported as the most common cancer in the United States, affecting an estimated one in five Americans during their lifetime.

Dr. Shirazi recommended tailoring a personalized skincare regimen based on individual skin type and concerns. “Ensure that the products you use are suitable for your skin type and address your specific issues, as every person’s skin is unique,” she advised.

She cautioned against blindly adopting a friend’s skincare routine without considering its compatibility with one’s own skin, emphasizing the importance of selecting products that cater to individual needs and preferences.
