A writer known for creating popular lifestyle content has revealed a healthy snack that is endorsed by centenarians for its deliciousness.
Dan Buettner, 64, founder of Blue Zones and host of the hit Netflix documentary “How to Live to 100,” shared his discovery of a snack through a recent Instagram video. Blue Zones are regions known for their higher life expectancy among the elderly. Buettner studied the diet, exercise habits, work routines, and community relationships of Blue Zones residents to uncover the secrets to longevity.
In the video, Buettner introduced air-popped popcorn (without butter and oil) as a tasty treat approved by centenarians and cited it as the best snack for longevity that won’t compromise health.
He disclosed, “It is rich in fiber, packed with complex carbohydrates, and even contains more antioxidants than many vegetables.”
Popcorn is often associated with movie nights and butter or oil, but when prepared correctly, it is gradually becoming a healthy snack option. The key is air-popping the popcorn without adding butter to avoid excessive calorie intake and fat, which can also aid in weight management.
According to Buettner’s post on Instagram, “This may be the best longevity snack in your pantry. It is affordable, easy to make, and most importantly, it tastes delicious. Centenarians approve of it.”
“It is the best centenarian longevity snack you can have, and it is affordable,” he added. “It is easy to make, store, and tastes delicious.”
The New York Post reported that according to research from the Mayo Clinic, consuming whole grains such as brown rice, oatmeal, and of course, popcorn, can help lower blood pressure and LDL (bad cholesterol) levels, reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and colon cancer.
Studies also indicate that incorporating more whole grains, like popcorn, into your diet can lower the risk of dementia. Due to its low-calorie, high-fiber content, popcorn can help control weight by promoting a feeling of fullness.
Contrary to popular belief, making air-popped popcorn doesn’t require an air fryer. Some experts advise against it, as it may burn the popcorn and pose a fire hazard.
The most common method for making air-popped popcorn is to place kernels in a paper bag and microwave on high for a few minutes.
