Crowded and Dirty: Times Square in New York City Ranked as the World’s Largest “Tourist Trap”

According to the latest survey by the online language learning platform Preply, Times Square in New York City ranks among the top in the world’s “worst tourist traps,” with visitors expressing strong dissatisfaction with its overcrowding and dirty environment.

The research, as reported by the New York Post, analyzed 81 famous landmarks globally, using two forums and selecting a long list of attractions, narrowing it down to those with over 1,000 reviews. The comments were then analyzed to identify negative terms such as “underwhelming,” “overrated,” and “tourist trap.” The results revealed that Times Square was rated the worst among them.

The report indicates that despite New York City expecting to attract up to 64.5 million visitors by the end of 2024, the visitor experience at Times Square is severely lacking. The crowds, congestion, and dirty environment here starkly contrast with the reputation of its globally iconic status.

Some visitor comments mentioned in the study stated, “It’s too crowded here, impossible to navigate,” and “High expectations, but very disappointed in reality.”

Apart from New York’s Times Square, other internationally renowned attractions such as Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, and Las Ramblas in Barcelona have also been placed in the category of dissatisfactory experiences for tourists. These locations are similarly criticized for being overly commercialized and poorly managed in terms of visitor experience.

Sylvia Johnson, a language learning expert at Preply, suggests that before visiting these destinations, tourists should consider learning some local language and customs, understanding traditions, dress codes, and social etiquette. This not only helps avoid cultural missteps but also enhances the depth of the travel experience.
