The New Hope Chinese Cancer Care Foundation, which has been serving over a thousand cancer patients and their families for twelve years, will hold its annual event on October 19th (Sunday) from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Mission City Center for Performing Arts.
The theme for this year’s gathering is “Creating New Hope,” aiming to assist cancer patients and their families in facing challenges with optimism and a positive attitude, while moving forward with the support of the community.
The first speaker will be Dr. Edmund Tai, the foundation’s first president. Dr. Tai, a former oncologist at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation with thirty years of experience, was diagnosed with stage four cancer two years ago. Transitioning from a healthcare provider to a patient, he will share his personal journey and remind cancer patients not to live in fear or wait for death but to choose a meaningful life and approach “how to depart” with a positive mindset. He emphasizes that cancer patients are “never alone” and seeking help is crucial. The mission of New Hope is to help patients build the confidence to continue moving forward.
The second speaker is Dr. Jeffrey Velotta, a thoracic surgeon at Kaiser Oakland. In recent years, the proportion of lung cancer in non-smoking Asian women has been increasing. Dr. Velotta will discuss this phenomenon and share early detection methods and the latest treatment trends to raise awareness among the community.
Following the two lectures, there will be a Q&A session where participants can submit questions in advance for the doctors to answer. The annual event will also feature a medical trivia quiz and performing arts program to educate and entertain the attendees in a warm atmosphere. This year, Bay Area renowned host He Taiguang and female anchor Wan Ruochuan will team up to add more highlights.
Established in 2013, New Hope has been providing free services such as physician consultations, recovery meals, transportation assistance, rehabilitation courses, medical lectures, support groups, and outings for cancer patients. As a non-profit organization, they rely primarily on fundraising and volunteer support. The event organizing committee urges the community to continue providing both manpower and financial assistance to serve more people in need.
