On May 6, a total of 118 towns and streets in Guangdong Province experienced heavy rain and severe rainstorms, with the maximum rainfall reaching 226.4 millimeters. The heavy rain led to a large number of flight delays at Shenzhen Airport on that day.
According to a report from the China News Agency, heavy rain poured down in Guangzhou in the afternoon of the 6th, causing severe flooding on some roads. The Guangdong Provincial Meteorological Observatory predicted that from 2:00 p.m. on the 5th to 2:00 p.m. on the 6th, 17 towns and streets in the province recorded over 100 millimeters of heavy rain, while 101 towns and streets recorded rainfall ranging from 50 to 100 millimeters. The towns with the highest rainfall included: Pinggang Town in Jiangcheng District, Yangjiang with 226.4 millimeters; Feilaixia Town in Qingcheng District, Qingyuan with 146.3 millimeters; Taoyuan Town in Heshan City, Jiangmen with 145 millimeters. As of 5:50 p.m. on the 6th, there were still 31 towns and streets under effective heavy rain warnings in the province.
The heavy rain caused significant flight delays at Shenzhen. China Southern Airlines announced that due to thunderstorms, flights going in and out of Shenzhen Airport were severely delayed, and from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the 6th, the airline initiated a widespread yellow response for flight delays at Shenzhen.
According to some passengers’ online posts that day, “I heard that all flights at Shenzhen Airport were delayed for nearly half a day or cancelled due to the heavy rain, so I consider myself lucky for only being delayed for an hour last night.” “The flight at 00:10 took off at 7:00.” “The flight originally scheduled for 7:00 in the evening was delayed until 9:40, then I immediately switched to the 4:00 p.m. flight, but it also took off around 7:00, and the airport lounge was packed.”
The Guangdong Provincial Meteorological Observatory predicts that from the 7th to the 8th, most cities and counties will still experience thunderstorms, with some areas in the central and northern regions expecting heavy rain or severe rainstorms. From the 9th to the 10th, cold air will move southward, bringing a new round of rainfall to Guangdong.
