Connecticut General Assembly Passes Resolution to Commend the 45th Anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act

Connecticut State House passed a resolution on April 17 to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act and the 25th anniversary of the sister-state relationship between Taiwan and Connecticut. The resolution emphasizes the shared values of freedom and democracy between Taiwan and the United States. Building upon the foundation of the Taiwan Relations Act and the “Six Assurances,” both parties aim to deepen cooperation across various fields, contributing to the maintenance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The resolution also congratulated Taiwan on successfully completing free and fair elections in January this year.

Led by Kevin Ryan, Chairman of the Connecticut State House Taiwan Caucus, the resolution reaffirms Taiwan’s status as a mature democratic nation with a stable free market economy. It also acknowledges Taiwan as an indispensable partner for the United States in the Indo-Pacific region. Connecticut will continue to support the negotiation of a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) and an Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement (ADTA) between Taiwan and the U.S., fostering a closer economic and trade partnership. The resolution also supports enhancing Mandarin language education exchanges between Taiwan and Connecticut and signing a driver’s license reciprocity agreement to promote people-to-people exchanges.

The resolution this year also supports U.S. assistance in Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and other international organizations.

Director-General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, Liang-Guey Li, was invited to witness the passage of the resolution by the Connecticut State House and also co-hosted a celebratory tea reception with the State House on the same day.

During the tea reception, Director-General Liang-Guey Li remarked on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act, expressing that the Biden administration has repeatedly praised Taiwan as a successful democratic story, a force for good in the world, and a reliable partner for the United States. The strong partnership between Taiwan and the U.S. has received bipartisan support from the U.S. Congress, and it is hoped that Taiwan and Connecticut will continue to deepen bilateral cooperation in industries, technology, and education on top of the existing foundation, together crafting a new chapter in the success story of democracy.
