The United States Congresswoman Grace Meng recently announced that a pilot program for online passport renewal has been successfully converted into a permanent service. This will greatly facilitate passport renewals for citizens across the country, including those in New York.
The pilot program was first launched last summer with limited application slots available. The system would temporarily shut down each day once the application limit was reached. However, the new online passport renewal system is now fully operational, running 24 hours a day and accessible through mobile phones, tablets, or computers for users to submit applications at any time.
Meng stated that this system will have a long-lasting positive impact, saying, “This platform utilizes modern technology to provide a more convenient option for passport holders in the Queens area and across the United States. It will be a tremendous convenience for those planning international travel, visiting family and friends, or engaging in international business.”
To be eligible for online passport renewal through the system, citizens must meet certain criteria. These include being at least 25 years old, having a passport expiring within 10 years issued between 2009 and 2015, no name, gender, date of birth, or place of birth changes, and residing in the United States.
Currently, the fee for online passport renewal remains at $130. Those who meet the criteria can apply through the following website: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/have-passport/renew-online.html
Additionally, the online system does not apply to renewing children’s passports, first-time applicants, or those residing outside the United States who need passport renewals or expedited applications.
