Jacky Cheung held the final show of his “60+” world tour concert at the Taipei Arena on the night of June 16th. Despite performing while feeling under the weather, he still demonstrated remarkable vocal prowess. Regarding complaints about singing many Cantonese songs, he mentioned that although he speaks Mandarin fairly well, as a singer from Hong Kong, Cantonese songs hold a special significance for him.
After a hiatus of 6 years, the over sixty-year-old Jacky Cheung kicked off 9 shows of his “60+” world tour concert at the Taipei Arena. However, he had to cancel the initially scheduled 3 shows from the 7th to the 9th due to contracting RSV (respiratory syncytial virus). Although the final 3 shows went on as planned, he was still unwell, apologizing to the fans at every show and lamenting his inability to deliver a perfect performance due to the virus affecting his respiratory tract and lungs.
On the night of the 16th, Jacky Cheung performed a series of classic songs, including “Breaking Up on a Rainy Day,” “I Only Want to Walk with You for Life,” “A Thousand Reasons to Be Heartbroken,” and more. Despite his ongoing recovery, he candidly expressed, “I didn’t expect today to be harder than the first day; I really gave it my all,” and thanked the understanding of his Taiwanese fans. Towards the end of the concert, Jacky Cheung jokingly mentioned that his voice seemed to have cracked a bit and expressed a strong desire to start all over again.
Of note is that some audience members expressed dissatisfaction when melodies of Cantonese songs like “Breaking Up on a Rainy Day” and “I Only Want to Walk with You for Life” resounded on the stage.
In response to online complaints about singing multiple Cantonese songs, Jacky Cheung said, “Please forgive me. Many people got to know Jacky Cheung through Mandarin songs, although I can speak Mandarin fairly well, I am from Hong Kong.” He emphasized that these songs not only represent his musical journey but also carry a deep emotional connection with countless fans.
Jacky Cheung mentioned that he respects the opinions of every audience member but will also stand firm on his musical style and cultural roots. He believes that true music enthusiasts will understand and respect his choices.
