Community Leader Martha Holds Health Seminar.

On June 24, Martha Flores-Vazquez, the founder of the Community Prevention Alternatives for Families in Crisis Center in Flushing, organized a health seminar to promote healthy eating and lifestyle choices.

She emphasized that taking control of one’s own health is essential, rather than relying solely on doctors and medication. There are various ways to achieve good health, such as reducing stress, managing depression, relaxation techniques, meditation, and dietary adjustments. Maintaining a balance in the body can be achieved through a focus on nutrition and mental well-being.

Martha stated that health starts with oneself and that empowerment is the key. However, many people lack understanding of healthy eating. She shared a personal anecdote, recalling how her doctor once told her she needed to learn about proper nutrition. At first, she was puzzled, thinking she already knew how to eat. It was later revealed to her that she lacked understanding, for instance, consuming too much rice or noodles could lead to diabetes, while excessive salt intake could affect blood pressure.

She also advised individuals facing psychological issues to seek support from friends, practice relaxation techniques, engage in physical exercise, or indulge in their favorite desserts, as these methods can contribute to resolving mental health challenges.
