The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has announced the launch of a new “Lead Water Pipe Replacement Program” in the 20th District of Queens (Flushing, Murray Hill), where residential properties will receive free lead pipe replacements at no cost to homeowners.
This initiative is currently underway with DEP and contractor P&TII actively notifying residents by door-to-door visits, and the specific construction areas have been disclosed on official maps.
The city government stated that currently, only two communities in the entire city of New York have been chosen as pilot areas, and the 20th District of Queens is one of them.
Normally, the “private service lines” connecting the main street water pipes to residential properties are the responsibility of homeowners for maintenance and replacement, with costs often exceeding $10,000. Through this program, all qualifying residents can have lead water pipes replaced with copper pipes, eliminating health risks and expenses completely covered.
The city administration pointed out that the tap water in New York City is lead-free from the source, but if residences still use lead pipes, there is a potential risk of lead material absorption during water transport, posing health hazards. Excessive lead intake can impact children’s neurodevelopment and adult cardiovascular health.
Councilwoman Sandra Ung of Flushing stated: “If your home uses lead water pipes, I strongly recommend taking advantage of this excellent opportunity for a free replacement.”
The construction period is estimated to be about 1 to 2 days, with sidewalks and roads restored within approximately 2 weeks. A one-year warranty is provided, with no increase in water bills or property taxes.
Only homeowners who have received communication from the DEP are eligible to enroll in this program. Homeowners can visit the DEP website to verify their eligibility and register online: https://tinyurl.com/ycyhh4mc
