Chongqing River Backflows, Villagers Trapped, Some Road Sections Flooded Up to 2 Meters

Chongqing was hit by flooding, with areas such as Changshou experiencing river water overflowing and houses being submerged. In some sections of Chengxi Town, Dianjiang County, the water depth reached about 2 meters, leaving villagers stranded. From July 9th to 12th, the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and the Jialing River basin are expected to face the largest flood since the beginning of the flood season, with the Three Gorges Reservoir opening floodgates for the first time this year.

According to reports from multiple mainland Chinese media outlets, from 7:00 on the 10th to 7:00 on the 11th, there were severe to extremely heavy rainfalls in some northeastern, central-western, and southeastern parts of Chongqing, with isolated stations recording exceptional torrential rains. In places like Changshou, there were instances of river water overflow and houses being flooded, while Chengxi Town in Dianjiang County experienced internal flooding, with some roads accumulating water up to about 2 meters, resulting in villagers being trapped.

From 8:00 on the 11th to 8:00 on the 12th, there is a forecast for heavy to torrential rainfall in parts of north-central Chongqing, with areas in the northern part of the city expecting bouts of exceptionally heavy rainfall.

As per the Chongqing Municipal Water Resources Bureau, the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and the Jialing River basin are predicted to witness the largest flood since the beginning of the flood season from the 9th to the 12th. By the morning of the 10th, the first peak of this rising water process had reached the central urban area of Chongqing. Due to the combined effects of heavy rainfall and inflows from the upper reaches, the water level of the Jialing River is on the rise, with swift river currents.

The Yangtze River Water Conservancy Commission stated that in the coming week, the upper reaches of the Yangtze River will undergo multiple rising processes, with the Three Gorges Reservoir expecting a peak inflow of around 45,000 cubic meters per second around the 12th.

It was reported that the Three Gorges Reservoir would open one flood outlet at 2:00 pm and another at 6:00 pm on the 11th, gradually increasing the discharge flow from 27,000 cubic meters per second to 31,000 cubic meters per second. This marks the first flood discharge of the year from the Three Gorges Reservoir.

By 8:00 on the 11th, the water level of the Three Gorges Reservoir had risen to 159.90 meters, approximately 15 meters higher than the average water level for the same period in previous years, marking the highest water level for the same period since the normal operation of the Three Gorges Reservoir began.
