Chongqing, Aug 10-11 – Several areas in Chongqing experienced heavy rainfall on August 10th and 11th. As of 6:00 am on the 11th, over 15,000 people in the city were affected by the downpours. According to data from the mainland China meteorological monitoring, from 7:00 am on the 10th to 7:00 am on the 11th, 137 rain gauges in 16 districts and counties including Banan, Tongnan, Hechuan, and Dazu in Chongqing recorded heavy rain. Additionally, in 27 districts and counties such as Shapingba, Beibei, and Yubei, 607 rain gauges reported rainstorms. The highest rainfall was recorded in Xingsheng, Hechuan, reaching 167 millimeters.
On the 10th, the heavy rainfall caused trees in many areas of Nanchuan District in Chongqing to fall or branches to break. By 9:10 pm that evening, the forestry and greening management office had dealt with over a hundred instances of fallen branches. At 9:00 am on August 11th, 29 districts and counties in Chongqing experienced heavy rain again, with 15 of them facing severe rainstorms. Due to the impact of the rainfall, two rivers in Chongqing, Heixi River in Nanchuan District and a tributary of Laoxi River in Rongchang District, exceeded the warning levels. However, as of now, they have both retreated below alert levels. Meanwhile, 53 small and medium-sized rivers like Sunxi River in Jiangjin District and Qiongjiang in Tongliang District have seen water levels rise by 1-5 meters, remaining below the warning levels. Chongqing has activated a level III emergency response for flood and drought disasters across the city.
According to online comments from Chongqing residents, “The Ficus virens have turned into boats, drowning several cars,” “I was working the night shift in the community (Dazu District). I didn’t know it had turned into a river outside while I was sleeping,” “It didn’t rain for long, but it got this bad in no time,” “Our South Gate Plaza is also flooded like this.”
In a video shared by “Weather V Life,” due to the excessive rainfall, some road sections were flooded, turning motorcycles into speedboats, making commuting difficult for office workers. The video shows streets turning into rivers, forcing cars and electric bikes to travel through the water, with the water level reaching up to the neck in some places.
Furthermore, the torrential rain on the morning of August 11th caused flooding in a low-lying house in the Water Mouth Group of Jingangbei Village, Beibei District in Chongqing. An official video report from Ping An Chongqing showed the water rising rapidly to the window sill height, trapping two elderly individuals and a child inside the house. By 6:00 am on the 11th, over 15,000 people had been evacuated in the city.
According to the forecast, on the daytime of the 12th, there will be light to moderate rain in the eastern regions, locally heavy rain, with mostly cloudy to partly cloudy skies in other areas and temperatures ranging from 22°C to 35°C. In the central urban areas, it will be partly to mostly cloudy with temperatures between 26°C and 33°C. From the night of the 12th to the daytime of the 13th (from 8:00 pm on the 12th to 8:00 pm on the 13th), there will be showers in the southeastern regions, partially to mostly sunny skies in other areas with temperatures between 18°C and 37°C. In the central city, it will be partly to mostly sunny with temperatures ranging from 26°C to 36°C.
