According to a report by Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), the incident occurred around 4 p.m. on May 14th when an SUV crashed into a line of elementary school students walking in a queue in Misato City, Saitama Prefecture. The impact injured four boys. The driver got out of the vehicle to check on the situation and apologized but then drove away without staying at the scene.
The four injured boys are all sixth-grade elementary school students, with one possibly having a fractured right foot, while the other three sustained minor injuries.
After the accident, the driver of the vehicle made several turns through residential areas to escape the scene. The police have launched an investigation into the hit-and-run incident.
On the 15th, the police found the vehicle involved in the accident in a parking lot at a company dormitory about two kilometers away from the scene and detained a Chinese national who was in the passenger seat at the time.
During the police investigation, it was revealed that there were two Chinese nationals in the car at the time of the accident, but the driver was missing. The police suspect that the owner of the car was likely driving at the time of the accident and are urgently trying to locate him.
According to a report by Kyodo News on May 18th, on the same morning, a Chinese worker named Deng Hongpeng, who resides in Misato City, turned himself in at the local police station. He was arrested on charges of negligent driving causing injury and hit-and-run. The police are continuing to investigate his actions from the time of the incident until he surrendered. They are also questioning another foreign male who may have been in the car at the time of the incident to gather more information. The case will undergo further investigation.
