The Republic of China’s diplomats Mr. and Mrs. Zheng Rongjun were invited to attend the birthday party of the Japanese ambassador to Denmark at the Japanese Embassy in Denmark in February. During the event, the Chinese Communist Party requested the Japanese side to expel the Taiwan representatives, but after being refused, they left the scene in anger. Experts pointed out that Japan and Denmark’s firm stance against the Chinese ambassador’s rudeness reflects the international backlash against “wolf warrior diplomacy” and raises questions about Xi Jinping’s judgment of the international situation.
Political commentator and lawyer Chen Yishen told Epoch Times that the behavior of the Chinese ambassador to Denmark, Wang Xuefeng, at the birthday party was a blatant violation of diplomatic etiquette. This incident, disclosed by Danish media “Berlingske Tidende,” exposed the “wolf warrior” image of the Chinese Communist Party in the Danish diplomatic circle.
Chen Yishen pointed out that Wang Xuefeng’s actions not only offended the host Japan but also Denmark, making the Danish diplomatic circle more aware of the Chinese Communist Party’s rudeness and disregard for international norms and diplomatic etiquette.
He mentioned that since Xi Jinping took office as the President of China, he has advocated for promoting the foreign policy of the Chinese Communist Party with the mission to achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Under this new policy, “daring to brandish the sword” is the core concept. This policy requires all party cadres to adopt a strong new diplomatic approach during crucial moments. Chinese diplomats have thus shifted to using “firm language” and “taking the initiative” in their diplomatic behaviors, intervening in the internal affairs of foreign countries everywhere. This is the origin of “wolf warrior diplomacy.”
Chen Yishen stated that “wolf warrior diplomacy” shows the Chinese Communist Party’s strong hostility towards Western countries and reflects Xi Jinping’s belief in the international situation of “the rise of the East and the decline of the West.” Xi Jinping aims to compete globally with the United States, hoping to replace the United States and make China the sole superpower in the world.
“However, the outcome of this incident shows that both Japan and Denmark ignored the Chinese ambassador Wang Xuefeng’s demands without any compromise. In the awkward atmosphere, Wang Xuefeng ended up pointing at the Taiwan representative and making a threatening gesture before shamefully leaving the scene,” Chen Yishen said.
Chen Yishen noted that the fact that Japan and Denmark rejected the Chinese demand to expel the Taiwan representative indicates that they have already seen through the Chinese Communist Party’s true colors. With continuous provocations towards Japan for the military parade on September 3rd and Denmark’s heightened vigilance due to the Russia-Ukraine war, the “wolf warrior diplomacy” of the Chinese Communist Party has not intimidated other countries but rather sparked international outrage, proving Xi Jinping’s serious misjudgment of the international situation.
Chen Yishen also mentioned that from Wang Xuefeng’s standpoint, as the newly appointed Chinese ambassador to Denmark in 2024, his actions this time may have been to demonstrate his loyalty to Xi Jinping and avoid being targeted in Xi’s diplomatic show. In recent years, several defense ministers and military generals within the Chinese Communist Party have fallen from grace, causing internal unrest and political turmoil. Hence, Wang Xuefeng might have risked damaging the Chinese Communist Party’s image in diplomacy to show his allegiance to the leadership.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China strongly condemned the Chinese diplomatic staff for their malicious attempt to disrupt Taiwan’s normal interactions with other countries. This “wolf warrior diplomacy” displays not only a complete lack of respect for the host and a disregard for the basic etiquette expected at international events but also goes against the civilized behavior of international democratic societies.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China emphasized that such blatant, unbridled, and disrespectful behavior will provoke severe antipathy in the international community and will be intolerable in civilized and rule-of-law countries. The ministry urged the international community to collectively resist and strongly condemn China for such bullying rhetoric and despicable behaviors.
Chen Yishen underscored that the true reason for the Chinese Communist Party’s constant pressure on Taiwan in diplomacy is to prevent international recognition of the Republic of China. Taiwan’s current official name is the Republic of China, which inherited all the rights and obligations of the Qing Dynasty after the abdication of the Qing Emperor, representing the concept of “state succession.” On the other hand, the Chinese Communist Party overthrew the government of the Republic of China through armed rebellion and declared itself the “People’s Republic of China” in 1949, claiming to represent “China” as a whole.
He analyzed that the Chinese Communist Party fears international recognition of the Republic of China, leading to the idea of “two Chinas.” Worse still, if the international community were to recognize the Republic of China as the only legitimate government of China, it would be the worst-case scenario for the Chinese Communist Party. Therefore, the Chinese Communist Party’s diplomatic pressure on Taiwan is not due to Taiwan provoking China but rather reveals China’s concern about its lack of legitimacy to represent China.
