Yesterday (June 30th), at the 2024 Asian Youth Badminton Championship, Chinese singles player Zhang Zhijie suffered a sudden accident on the court, collapsed, and unfortunately passed away after being sent to the hospital, at the young age of 17.
The Badminton Asia Confederation and the Indonesian Badminton Association announced on July 1st that Chinese singles player Zhang Zhijie collapsed during an evening match on June 30th and was taken to the hospital. He passed away at 23:20 local time yesterday. Zhang Zhijie collapsed during a group stage match against the Japanese team, and medical staff and emergency teams tried to save him. He was quickly taken to the hospital by an ambulance. The Badminton Asia Confederation, Indonesian Badminton Association, and the organizing committee expressed deep sorrow and offered their heartfelt condolences to Zhang Zhijie’s parents, family, and the Chinese Badminton Association.
According to mainland media reports, Zhang Zhijie was born in Jiaxing in January 2007 and started playing badminton since kindergarten. He was transferred to the Zhejiang team in the third grade of primary school and joined the national youth team in 2023.
Zhang Zhijie had won various titles including the U15-17 Boys’ Singles Championship at the 2022 National U-Series Badminton Competition, Men’s Singles and Men’s Team Championships at the 2023 National Youth Badminton Championship, the Men’s Singles Championship at the 2024 Dutch Youth Badminton International, and the Men’s Team Championship at the 2024 National Youth Badminton Championship.
