Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Cui Tiankai Faces Protest at Harvard Speech

On Saturday, April 20th, Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, faced protests from students while attending a public event at Harvard University. The sudden awkward situation left Xie Feng silent as he tried to navigate the unexpected confrontation.

According to a video released by the “Students for a Free Tibet” Twitter account, during Xie Feng’s speech at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, a man loudly questioned Xie Feng on how he could have the face to speak at Harvard University when the Chinese government blatantly violates every human rights law in the world.

Faced with the challenge, Xie Feng fell into silence.

The Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University hosted a “China Conference” event on Saturday, with Xie Feng as the main guest along with scholars from Tsinghua University.

Protesting students stood up from their seats, holding up a Tibetan flag above their heads, shouting “Free Tibet.”

“How can you be here when the Chinese government directly violates every human rights law in the world? You represent a government that advocates for genocide. You engage in genocide against Tibetans, Uighurs, and occupy Hong Kong,” the protester shouted.

Security personnel began escorting the protesters out of the venue.

The video showed Xie Feng initially glancing at the protesters, but quickly turned his gaze forward towards the stage.

“You are a mockery. You don’t deserve to be here,” the protester said before being escorted out, with the exit conveniently located behind where Xie Feng stood.

“This is a free country,” the protester yelled as he was escorted out.

All eyes in the room were on the protester. The camera captured Xie Feng slightly lowering his head, without making any gestures or responses.

Even after being removed from the venue, the protester’s voice could be heard clearly echoing back into the room.

“You cannot bring your cross-border oppression to this country, this continent. You have tainted this place. Xie Feng, you should feel ashamed,” the protester stated.

Organizers quickly blocked off the exit with curtains as the protester’s voice faded but was still audible in the video. “Shame on China,” the protester reiterated.

The event organizers then took the stage to remind the audience to be mindful of their words and actions.
