Chinatown Councilman Celebrates Flying Tigers Veteran’s Widow’s 100th Birthday

On August 13th, Councilman Christopher Marte celebrated a special centenarian’s birthday in his office in Chinatown, New York.

The birthday star, Grandma Helen Chan, was born on August 13th 100 years ago. Her husband, Alan Chan, was awarded the highest civilian honor in the United States – the Congressional Gold Medal – for his service in the 14th Air Squadron, also known as the famous “Flying Tigers,” during World War II.

Marte expressed that celebrating a 100th birthday for a community member is a rare and honorable occasion.

“This is such an amazing story, it’s a model of the American dream,” Marte said. “A Chinese female immigrant coming to America, starting from working odd jobs to becoming a successful entrepreneur, has made significant contributions not only for herself, but also for her children, family, and the community.”

Marte noted that the medals and photos on the table showcased the recognition received domestically and internationally during World War II by Helen’s husband, a Flying Tigers member.

On behalf of the City Council, Marte presented Helen with an honorary certificate and, together with representatives from the American Hotel Chinese Association and the Chinese American Veterans Association, paid tribute to Helen, wishing her a happy 100th birthday.
