China faces severe convective weather in many places, highest-level rainstorm warnings issued

Today at 10:00, the China Meteorological Administration upgraded the rainstorm warning to the highest level of red, marking the first red alert for rainstorms this year. Prior to this, sudden heavy rainfall hit She County in Huangshan City, Anhui Province, triggering floods that destroyed multiple mountain roads, resulted in several people missing, and prompted the local authorities to activate a Level 1 red alert for mountain flood disasters.

The China Meteorological Administration issued a warning that from June 24th to 30th, there would be persistent heavy rainfall in the northern parts of Jiangnan, the eastern and southern parts of Jianghan, Jianghuai, as well as in Guizhou and Guangxi. In some areas including the southeastern part of Hubei, the northern part of Hunan, the southern part of Anhui, the northern part of Jiangxi, and the western part of Zhejiang, there will be heavy to severe rainstorms, with locally extremely heavy rainfall and severe convective weather such as short-term heavy rainfall and local thunderstorm gusts.

On the evening of June 22nd, the Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters in She County, Huangshan City, Anhui Province issued a Level 1 red alert for mountain flood disasters.

Anhui Province initiated a Level 4 emergency response to flood defense from 14:00 on June 20th. On that day, heavy rainfall in She County triggered floods and landslides, with an average rainfall of 158.5 mm within 12 hours, affecting over 27,000 people. Many houses collapsed, vehicles were washed away, and multiple casualties and missing persons were reported.

Local residents who witnessed the situation mentioned they had never seen such heavy rain before. In the afternoon of the 23rd, a 67-year-old villager from She County said to a reporter, “I’ve never seen such heavy rain before. The downpour in She County is getting heavier each time, and today we have encountered another major flood, even bigger than last time. I know of approximately five or six deaths.”

The villager added, “The areas severely affected by flooding are Huangshan, She County, Jixi, Daguyun, and Yuhang in Zhejiang.”

Another villager shared, “Many village roads have been destroyed by the floodwaters, and two village roads leading to my old house have been washed away. The houses in She County are currently safe, but many streets and roads are flooded.”

“In these troubled times, disasters are happening all over the world, we must take care of our health, observe the changes in the world,” he expressed.
