The 79th United Nations General Assembly is currently being held in New York, USA. Consul General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles, Ji Qin-yao, penned an article in the Beverly Press of Southern California, urging support for Taiwan’s participation in the United Nations. The article was published on September 26.
In his letter, Ji Qin-yao emphasized Taiwan’s significant role in the international community. Taiwan produces over 90% of the world’s high-end semiconductors and oversees nearly half of global maritime trade. Despite its undeniable economic and geopolitical importance, Taiwan continues to be excluded from the world’s largest international organization, the United Nations, a blatant disregard that undermines global cooperation and governance.
The exclusion of Taiwan is perplexing and politically motivated, primarily due to China’s distortion of the 1971 United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758. This resolution only addressed the issue of China’s representation, not Taiwan.
Such abusive behavior damages the credibility of the United Nations and prevents the organization from benefiting from Taiwan’s expertise in areas such as humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and sustainable development. While China intensifies its pressure on Taiwan, threatening the peace and prosperity of billions of people, the United Nations’ silence is shocking.
Ji Qin-yao concluded his article by urging action during the United Nations General Assembly to rectify this oversight and include Taiwan in the discussions, making global dialogue more inclusive, contributing to international stability, and promoting the establishment of a more fair, rule-based international order.
