59-year-old senior mainland Chinese actress Jiang Wenli was caught up in a scandal in 2023 when rumors surfaced alleging that she was financially supporting a male college student. The gossip caused quite a stir at the time. Angered by the accusations, Jiang Wenli took legal action against a blogger. Recently, news has emerged that the court ruled in favor of Jiang Wenli, determining that the plaintiff had insulted and defamed her severely. The court ordered the blogger to issue apologies and pay compensation in two separate trials. On September 19, the defendant finally published a public apology and compensated Jiang Wenli with 125,000 Chinese yuan.
On September 19, a Beijing-based law firm released a brief on the case: Jiang Wenli, also known as Jiang Wenli, filed a case regarding defamation of character against Wang** (WeChat public account “Yu** Xian,” WeChat ID: yuji***xian). The defendant Wang** complied with the effective civil judgment by publishing an apology letter in a certain publication, publicly apologizing to Jiang Wenli, and compensating her for mental distress and rights protection expenses totaling 125,000 yuan.
According to mainland media reports, in April 2023, a blogger operating a WeChat public account (“Yu** Xian”) published articles containing false statements about Jiang Wenli, including allegations of supporting a male college student, which seriously harmed her reputation. The first instance ruling required the defendant to publish apologies through the implicated WeChat public account for ten consecutive days from the date of the judgment, and to pay Jiang Wenli compensation for mental distress and rights protection expenses totaling 125,000 yuan. Wang, the defendant, appealed the first-instance judgment. The second-instance court rejected the appeal and upheld the original ruling.
Following the enforcement of the aforementioned judgment, the defendant failed to fulfill the obligation to compensate and apologize voluntarily. Jiang Wenli had to engage a law firm to apply for enforcement from the court. As of September 19, 2025, the defendant had published an apology letter in the designated publication, publicly apologized to Jiang Wenli, and fulfilled the corresponding compensation duties.
Public records show that Jiang Wenli was born in 1966 in Bengbu City, Anhui Province. She rose to fame with her role as “Xia Xiaoxue” in the TV series “Holding Hands,” and went on to star in several urban emotional dramas such as “Chinese-Style Divorce,” “Golden Wedding,” and “Keeping the Marriage Sacred.” She is the first female actress to win the Chinese Television Triple Crown.
In recent years, rumors have occasionally surfaced about Jiang Wenli’s “divorce” from her photographer husband, Gu Changwei, with some even going as far as claiming that they had completed the formalities at the Civil Affairs Bureau. However, Jiang Wenli has previously stated in interviews that she never responds to such rumors and remains unfazed by them, not even showing a hint of emotion. Whenever some time passes, the public can see her and Gu Changwei attending events hand in hand, smiling and laughing, which inevitably dispels the rumors. There are rumors that the couple has now relocated to the UK, living a low-key life.
