Chengdu Girl Dies in Bali, Roommate Recalls Food Poisoning Suspicion.

Recently, a netizen posted on Tencent News Hot Questions claiming that they suspected food poisoning during their stay at a youth hostel in Bali, Indonesia, almost leading to death. Unfortunately, a girl from Chengdu also staying at the same hostel passed away due to lack of timely treatment.

According to the post, the netizen arrived in Bali on August 31 and stayed at a youth hostel called Clandestino Hostel Canggu, where they had dinner. In the early morning of September 1, they suddenly experienced severe vomiting, diarrhea, and cold sweats, so they went to the nearest clinic for IV fluids and oxygen. At the clinic, they met girl A who also stayed at the same hostel.

By noon that day, when the netizen returned to the hostel in improved condition, they found the Chengdu girl in their room vomiting uncontrollably and too weak to move. At the same time, another girl from Europe or America in the diagonally opposite bed was also calling for help.

Subsequently, staff helped the girl from Europe or America who could still walk to the hospital, and informed them that the Chengdu girl who couldn’t move would have a doctor come to see her.

“I was also exhausted and fell asleep due to lack of rest for two days,” the netizen said, recalling that when they woke up in pain, they saw that the Chengdu girl’s condition had improved significantly.

By 11 p.m. that night, the netizen’s condition worsened, and they rushed to the clinic for IV fluids again. In the early hours of September 2, they woke up in excruciating pain once more, managed to reach the door to seek help, and were taken to another clinic by staff.

On that day, the netizen was admitted to BICM Hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Doctors diagnosed acute gastroenteritis and severe dehydration, stating that their levels were dangerously low and shock could occur at any time.

During this time, the police came to inquire about their situation. It was then the netizen learned that it wasn’t just their room with four people experiencing vomiting and diarrhea, but two girls were admitted before them. This was when they realized the gravity of the situation.

On the second day in the ICU, the netizen messaged the Chengdu girl, urging her to go to the hospital. However, she never replied.

On the third day, the netizen was diagnosed with pneumonia. After spending four days in the hospital, they returned to the hostel to find that some rooms had been sealed off, but others were still in operation. When inquiring about the Chengdu girl, the staff claimed they didn’t know her whereabouts.

Upon returning home, the netizen underwent a check-up at the hospital and was found to have not only pneumonia but also pleural effusion. Fortunately, subsequent tests showed a relatively good recovery, with just a small nodule detected, indicating no significant issues.

The netizen attempted to contact the Chengdu girl but never received a response. It wasn’t until later, through friends on Xiaohongshu, that they learned she had passed away.

“Now looking back, it’s terrifying to think about,” the netizen expressed, stating that at least 11 people who exhibited severe vomiting and diarrhea symptoms and were hospitalized, including the six people in their room. They added that a Chinese girl in the adjacent room fainted in the bathroom and no one attended to her from 4 a.m. until 11 a.m.

On September 24, the Chengdu Commercial News contacted the aforementioned netizen, Ms. Li (pseudonym). Li stated, “Even if the staff had approached the Chengdu girl during breakfast, she might not have died. If electrolytes were promptly replenished and medical help was provided in time, she could have been saved.”

Li questioned the cause of the Chengdu girl’s death – was it food poisoning, hotel renovation contamination, or water issues? To date, doctors, police, and the hostel have not provided any answers.

In response, the Chinese Consulate General in Denpasar stated that they had contacted the girl’s family, and local police had performed an autopsy on her, with the body already cremated.

The spokesperson for the Bali Badung County police, overseeing the area where the incident took place, mentioned, “The case is still under investigation, and we cannot, or rather, currently unable to explain the progress of this case.”
