California Treasurer’s Office caught in FBI investigation

California State Treasurer Fiona Ma’s spokesperson has confirmed to Newsweek that the office is cooperating with a federal law enforcement agency’s investigation.

In an email statement, the spokesperson mentioned that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has formally contacted the State Treasurer’s office requesting documents, and they are complying with the request. However, the spokesperson did not disclose whether these documents are related to the State Treasurer’s office or to Fiona Ma personally.

Multiple sources confirmed this information to KCRA 3 on April 15th. The sources also revealed that the documents being requested are part of a subpoena issued by a federal grand jury in relation to an undisclosed case.

An FBI spokesperson stated that she would neither confirm nor deny the existence of any investigation.

Fiona Ma, a member of the Democratic Party, has been serving as California State Treasurer since 2019. Her responsibilities include managing California’s investments, serving on the board of the retirement fund, overseeing tax credits for affordable housing, and financing plans for public infrastructure projects.

She has previously held positions at the California Commission on the Status of Women, the California State Assembly, and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

In January of this year, Fiona Ma announced her candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of California in 2026. Her campaign website states, “With over twenty years of public service experience, I am qualified to be California’s second-highest elected official and will continue to be a strong advocate for improving the state’s housing supply, environment, education system, and economy.”

Additionally, Fiona Ma is also facing a sexual harassment lawsuit.

Judith Blackwell, the former chair of the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee, filed a lawsuit in 2021 after being fired. She alleged that Fiona Ma sexually harassed her while they shared a room at a hotel and a rental property.

Fiona Ma has denied these allegations. In September of last year, she stated, “As I have said from the beginning, this case was brought by a disgruntled former employee who was legally terminated due to performance-related issues, and I look forward to having my day in court.”

The trial for this case has been postponed, with court records indicating that it may take place later this fall.
