California startup’s new product: fire-suppressing spray

California’s Morgan Hill is home to Komodo Fire Systems, a startup founded in 2019. This innovative company has developed a water-soluble and biodegradable spray that can prevent fires from starting in the first place.

Jack Kimmich, the Chief Operating Officer of Komodo, explains how this fire retardant works to protect against fires. When the spray comes into contact with fire, it releases trace inhibitors, primarily carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and a small amount of water, effectively stopping the spread of flames.

Moreover, Kimmich highlights another benefit of the spray, which is its ability to suppress burning flames. Compared to using water alone to extinguish fires, the amount of Komodo spray needed is significantly less.

The issue of wildfires continues to plague California, with no signs of abating. According to data from CalFire, as of September 3rd, there have been 5,755 wildfires this year, consuming over 830,000 acres of California’s land.

As many Californians lose their fire insurance, Komodo is focusing on demonstrating the value of using their product to insurance companies so that homeowners can regain coverage. In California alone, Liberty Mutual is canceling fire insurance policies for 17,000 policyholders.

Kimmich notes that many people are losing their fire insurance, but some have used Komodo spray and shown their insurance companies the difference it makes, leading to reinstated coverage.

CEO Shawn Sahbari of Komodo Fire Systems tells Epoch Times, “For me, if we can reduce the environmental damage caused by these fires, that’s a success.”
