California Political Figures Thank President Biden for His Service
Following President Joe Biden’s unexpected announcement on July 21 that he will not seek re-election and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic presidential nomination, political figures in California expressed their gratitude for the current president’s service.
As a strong supporter of President Biden’s reelection campaign this year, California Governor Gavin Newsom applauded President Biden’s leadership skills. “President Biden is an extraordinary, history-making leader who has achieved remarkable accomplishments for the working class and all Americans,” Governor Newsom expressed in a post on X-platform on July 21. He added, “He will be remembered as one of the most influential and selfless presidents in history.”
Newsom has long been seen as a potential contender to succeed President Biden. In subsequent posts on X-platform, he expressed his support for Kamala Harris, praising the Vice President as “steadfast,” “courageous,” and “unwavering,” stating that there is no one better than Harris to stand up against Trump.
Kamala Harris, a former San Francisco District Attorney, Attorney General of California, and US Senator, expressed her gratitude for President Biden’s support shortly after receiving it. She stated on X-platform, “I am honored. My goal is to win this nomination.” Harris also mentioned her past year of traveling across the country to discuss the clear choices in this critical election and her ongoing work in the coming days and weeks.
In subsequent posts, Harris stated her commitment to “unite the Democratic Party and the country to defeat Donald Trump.” While many Democratic Party members support her for the presidency, the nomination process is still undecided. It remains unclear if there will be other potential candidates joining the race.
The Democratic National Convention is set to take place in Chicago from August 19 to 22, where the presidential nominee is expected to be officially confirmed.
Former Speaker of the House and current Member of the House Nancy Pelosi expressed her “love and gratitude” towards President Biden. In a post on X-platform on July 21, she said, “Joe Biden is a patriotic American who has always put the country’s interests first.” Pelosi further highlighted his vision, values, and leadership that make him one of the most influential presidents in American history. However, Pelosi did not endorse any candidate or discuss any potential campaign activities to replace Biden.
Last week, a congressperson issued a statement to several media outlets urging President Biden to step aside, citing concerns about his age and health affecting the Democratic Party’s chances, while also praising the President. California Democratic Representative Adam Schiff stated on X-platform, “Joe Biden will leave an unmatched legacy.” He added, “His accomplishments in a single term surpass those of many presidents in two terms, and he will be remembered as one of the greatest presidents of our time.”
Schiff also expressed his full support for Kamala Harris, looking forward to collaborating with her when she becomes president.
California Senator Alex Padilla thanked President Biden for achieving a “bipartisan transformative victory” and revitalizing “America’s leadership on the global stage.” On X-platform, Padilla stated, “Today, President Biden puts the nation first, which has been a consistent theme in his public service career.” In another post, Padilla supported Harris for the party’s leadership position, recognizing her defense of basic freedoms and dedication to enhancing the well-being of all Americans.
Laphonza Butler, appointed by Newsom to fill the late Senator Dianne Feinstein’s seat, expressed approval of Biden’s decision to withdraw. In her X-platform statement, she said, “Our country should be grateful to President Biden, especially for making such a difficult decision.” Butler urged Democrats to unify in support of Kamala Harris to protect the government’s policy agenda.
Assemblywoman Maxine Waters stated that she is one of President Biden’s “most ardent supporters” and pledged her “firm support” to Kamala Harris. Waters declared, “I would have stood with you (Biden) throughout the Democratic Party nomination process.” She continued, “But you decided to step aside… you are a kind and righteous person willing to make sacrifices for the country’s benefit.”
A state senator also remarked that Biden “implemented generational changes” and witnessed the flourishing of the stock market. Senate President pro tempore Mike McGuire expressed on social media on July 21, “Joe Biden has led our country with extraordinary skill, passion, and determination.” He added, “America has once again become a beacon of hope in the eyes of other nations.”
Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas stated in a social media post, “I am deeply grateful to him (President Biden) for his selfless leadership and enormous progress for America.” In another post, Rivas announced, “I am proud to join in supporting (Vice President Kamala Harris) in her quest for the Democratic Party nomination.”
Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg remarked that this decision reflects President Biden’s character, preserving his “four years of historic achievements.” Steinberg added, “His (Biden’s) selfless decision today provides the country with a better opportunity to consolidate these achievements and help our nation progress with strength and pride.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed her support shortly after President Biden endorsed Kamala Harris, highlighting the Vice President’s leadership with strength, courage, and compassion. Bass stated, “She has been a valuable ally in our efforts to improve the Los Angeles economy, safety, infrastructure, and in providing housing for our residents.”
San Francisco Mayor London Breed praised President Biden as “a reform leader for our nation.” Breed wrote on social media, “He (Biden) has supported unprecedented investments in infrastructure, climate change mitigation, public safety, making today’s America much better than when he took office.”
Breed referred to Harris as her “friend” who possesses the experience, strength, judgment, and integrity needed to defeat Donald Trump and serve as our next president.
The California Assembly Republican Leader expressed concerns about the process since 14 million voters chose President Biden during the primary.
“They didn’t let the voters decide; it’s undemocratic,” Assemblyman James Gallagher stated in a social media post on July 21. He added, “But that’s irrelevant. Their record is terrible. Americans have had enough of open borders and record inflation.”
