The Brooklyn Public Library has recently launched a new service that allows citizens to borrow various tools, including plumbing tools, pliers, and spirit levels. This initiative aims not only to promote a culture of reading but also to facilitate community members in learning practical skills and improving their quality of life.
This project was first introduced at the Greenpoint Environmental Education Center branch in Brooklyn. Currently, the library offers over 130 different types of tools, ranging from electric to manual tools, to meet the needs of citizens for household repairs and personal projects. Additionally, the service includes a series of workshops that teach citizens how to repair and maintain their personal belongings.
Acacia Thompson, the coordinator of the Greenpoint Library, stated that the purpose is to encourage community residents to rethink their relationship with their possessions and whether they can repair these items themselves. This not only helps extend the lifespan of items but also contributes to environmental conservation.
The process of borrowing tools is straightforward – citizens only need a valid Brooklyn Public Library adult borrower’s card to make online reservations. By accessing the library’s digital catalog, they can select the desired tools and then pick them up at the library within a week of receiving notification.
