British Chamber of Commerce: Doing business in China to become more difficult in the next 5 years

The “British Chamber of Commerce in China” said on Wednesday (22nd) that despite the efforts of the Chinese government to prevent foreign funds from being withdrawn, it is expected that doing business in China will become more difficult for British companies in the next 5 years.

On May 22nd, the British Chamber of Commerce in China stated that in order to restore investors’ confidence, the Chinese government has implemented 48 measures since August last year. However, British companies have not seen “meaningful openness” and are expecting regulatory obstacles to increase rather than decrease in the next 5 years.

The Chamber also mentioned that in the current complex geopolitical environment, the risk of escalating trade tensions is increasing, further constraining the confidence of British companies.

Chairman of the Chamber, Julian Fisher, said that the Chinese government is apparently planning a new approach to corporate relations, but it is crucial to clarify the role of enterprises. The current ambiguity is frustrating.

The Chamber believes that if the Chinese government can introduce higher predictability, clarity, and transparency in policy implementation, it will help restore confidence of enterprises in the market.
