Breaking News: New York Police Commissioner Caban Resigns, Doran to Serve as Acting Commissioner

In the United States, just a week after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) knocked on the door of New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Edward Caban, he submitted his resignation, stating that he was resigning “for the good of the city.” Mayor Eric Adams confirmed the news to the public half an hour ago.

Mayor Adams told the media, “I, like everyone else, have learned about the ongoing investigation recently, and I am very surprised.” He continued, “I have just accepted Caban’s resignation request; he believes this is the best decision, and I respect his decision and wish him all the best.”

He also praised Caban for his achievements during his 14-month tenure, such as confiscating 18,000 illegal firearms from the streets, leading to a historic low in street robbery crimes in the city.

Subsequently, Adams appointed Tom Donlon as the Acting Commissioner of the New York Police Department. Donlon is the former director of the New York area for the Department of Homeland Security, a renowned former FBI official, and a counterterrorism expert.

Last Wednesday (September 4th), the FBI raided the residences of at least three top officials in the New York City government, including Caban. The raids targeted David Banks, the girlfriend of the Education Commissioner, Sheena Wright, the Deputy Mayor in charge of public safety and brother of the Education Commissioner, Phil Banks, and seized their phones and electronic devices. Despite the severe statements from the FBI and the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, the general belief is that the investigation is related to “corruption” and “abuse of power for personal gain”.

Caban has served as the NYPD’s First Deputy Commissioner since 2022 and was appointed to the top position in July 2023.

As the city’s first Hispanic police commissioner, Caban made history. According to insiders in the police department who spoke to the media, Caban’s twin brother, former NYPD officer James Caban, has drawn federal attention for allegedly acting as a “fixer” in upscale Manhattan restaurants and nightclubs, reportedly as part of his “consulting” work.
