Boeing Announces Layoff of Over 500 Employees in California

Struggling aerospace giant Boeing announced that it will lay off over 500 employees in California, including 115 at Long Beach and 144 at El Segundo. These employees were informed on Wednesday, December 11th that they will be losing their jobs.

According to reports from the city news agency, the company filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) with the California Employment Development Department (EDD) in November, revealing plans to cut nearly 180 jobs at two factories in Seal Beach, and 57 in Huntington Beach. Additionally, job cuts are also planned at Boeing’s facility in San Diego.

As reported by the Long Beach Tribune, Boeing issued a statement on Tuesday stating, “As we announced in early October, we are adjusting the size of our workforce to align with our financial reality and more effectively focus on our priorities.”

Most affected employees are expected to depart within two months of receiving the notice. Eligible employees will receive severance pay, job placement assistance, and three months of healthcare subsidies.

The Seattle Times reported that the company, headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, is conducting layoffs across the United States, impacting approximately 3,500 employees.

Boeing has been facing challenges since a panel fell off a Boeing-manufactured aircraft mid-flight for Alaska Airlines in January of this year. The recent two-month machinists’ strike has further exacerbated the company’s troubles. However, Boeing denies that the strike has led to the layoffs.
