Blue Sun Palace Premiere at Cannes, Audience Gives Standing Ovation, Cast Tears Up

The brand new American film “Blue Sun Palace” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on the 19th, starring Wu Kexi, Li Kangsheng, and mainland Chinese actress Xu Haipeng. Following the screening, the entire audience gave a standing ovation, applauding non-stop, leaving the entire cast in tears on the spot.

“Blue Sun Palace” was selected for the 77th Cannes Film Festival’s “International Critics’ Week” competition section, marking the debut feature film of Constance Tsang, a promising Chinese-American director. The film was shot on location in New York.

On the premiere day, Wu Kexi made an elegant entrance in a Chanel black and white houndstooth dress, appearing alongside the Chinese-American director Constance Tsang, lead actors Li Kangsheng, Xu Haipeng, and producers Sally Sujin Oh, Eli Raskin, and Tony Yang. The standing ovation and continuous applause after the screening led to the cast and crew standing up to thank the audience, resulting in emotional moments and embraces, as international media outlets started praising the film.

During the premiere, director Constance Tsang was moved to tears, expressing her gratitude for the film being selected for the Cannes Film Festival’s “International Critics’ Week,” saying, “This is a very personal film for me, shot in my hometown of New York. Without being a Chinese immigrant growing up and living here, it would have been impossible for me to make this film.”

Wu Kexi emotionally stated, “I want to dedicate this film to all immigrants around the world who are striving in a foreign land, beautiful people! This time, I immersed myself in their immigrant lives for this role. They are warm and lovely, giving me wonderful experiences.”

Li Kangsheng happily remarked, “It’s been over a decade since I last attended the Cannes Film Festival, and I hope everyone enjoys this film.” Xu Haipeng was excited, saying, “I’m grateful fate brought me this great team, and I hope the film brings more emotions and love to everyone.”

Wu Kexi admitted, “The crew had to complete filming in just 18 days with limited resources, it required professionalism, efficiency, and a great sense of unity from the whole team to achieve that.”

She was pleasantly surprised by the love shown by many European and American filmmakers present, saying, “Despite being a Mandarin-language film revolving around the Chinese immigrant society, audiences of all races worldwide can be deeply moved. The magic of cinema is truly wonderful!”

The story of “Blue Sun Palace” revolves around two Chinese individuals living in the Queens district of America, who meet amidst a tragic death and develop a love story of mutual support. The film received positive reviews at the Cannes Film Festival, and the team is looking forward to the opportunity to showcase the movie to Taiwanese audiences in the future.
