Biden and Trump Call for Unity, Former Chief of Staff: Let’s Spread Goodness

Former U.S. President Trump attended the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee on Monday, July 15th, to make final preparations to secure the Republican presidential nomination. Last Saturday, Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, stating that this incident provides an opportunity for the nation to unite. President Biden also called for unity in a televised speech.

On Sunday, while en route to Milwaukee, Trump told the Washington Examiner, “This is an opportunity for the entire country, and even the world, to come together. The content of this (RNC) speech will be very different from what was planned two days ago.”

According to the New York Post, during an interview on his flight to Milwaukee, Trump said, “I want to work hard to unite our country. But I don’t know if that’s possible. People are very divided.”

On Sunday, in a White House television address, Biden stated, “America does not tolerate such violence, any violent behavior. That’s it. No exceptions. We cannot allow this violence to become normalized.”

He said, “Political discourse in this country has become very intense. It’s time to cool down.” Biden urged Americans to “come together.”

Biden condemned the assassination attempt and ordered an investigation into the shooting incident at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday. Trump’s right ear was grazed by a bullet, one supporter was killed, and two others were injured, with the suspect, a 20-year-old shooter, being shot dead by Secret Service agents.

American singer and songwriter Darryl Worley, in an interview with Epoch Times, expressed his feelings through his song “Have We Forgotten?” in response to the shooting incident involving Trump. “We need to come together, folks, and we better do it now.”

“Have we forgotten who we really are?” Worley wrote in the lyrics, “When we can still sit down and agree to disagree, common good is our common ground. Have we forgotten?”

In response to Saturday’s shooting, retired Army Chief Warrant Officer, public speaker, and author of “Resilient Transition” Saeed Mustafa, stated during an interview with Epoch Times that “violence directed at anyone, especially political figures, is unacceptable and unforgivable. Therefore, it is time for us as Americans to come together.”

“It is time to stop disseminating negative energy speech. It’s time to come together for a common goal, which is to make our country strong. It doesn’t matter which political camp you stand in. Even with disagreements, that doesn’t make it wrong, because this is America, but disagreements shouldn’t lead you to view the other side as enemies.”

He said, “Now we all have the opportunity to reflect on how we can be better people tomorrow. How can we be better politicians, better fathers, better mothers, better citizens? How can we unite and move forward like the United States of America?”

Mustafa, a veteran of the Gulf War, Somalia, and two Iraq Freedom Actions, twice awarded the Bronze Star, shared some suggestions after his reflection. He said, “First, ensure that each person will become better. You can’t control others, but you can control yourself. Let’s think positively.

“Let’s be more tolerant of each other. Let’s spread kindness. Let’s ponder on issues plaguing our nation, make our country better, and have serious discussions on overcoming some of these challenges.

“Regardless of the circumstances, we can have serious debates, but we don’t have to demonize each other.”
