The New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJ Turnpike Authority) recently warned the public to be cautious of fraudulent money scams through text messages.
Scammers are sending deceptive text messages, pretending to be from the “NJ Turnpike toll services,” asking recipients to click on a fake website link, enter their credit card number, and pay outstanding toll fees or balances. The messages also threaten to charge a late fee if payment is not made.
However, the toll services of the New Jersey Turnpike do not belong to the New Jersey Turnpike Authority or any other government agency.
This new scam is not limited to E-ZPass customers in New Jersey. Any mobile phone number with a New Jersey area code could receive these spoofed messages. Similar scams have been reported in Pennsylvania and New York.
The New Jersey Transportation Authority (NJTA) advises the public not to click on links or make payments upon receiving such messages. Instead, they should delete the message and report it to the Federal Trade Commission through ReportFraud.ftc.gov website. If someone has clicked on a fake link and submitted personal information, they should immediately contact their bank or credit card company.
