Bangkok Market Shooting Kills 6, Gunman Commits Suicide

Thai police said that a shooting incident took place at a market in the capital city of Bangkok on Monday (July 28), resulting in at least 6 deaths, including the perpetrator.

According to Thai police and medical personnel, the gunman shot and killed 4 market security guards and a female vendor on the spot, then took his own life after the attack. Two other women were injured and have been urgently taken to the hospital for treatment.

The authorities are currently working to identify the suspect and determine the motive behind the attack. The incident occurred at the popular Or Tor Kor market in Bangkok, which is known for selling agricultural products. Police officer Sanong Saengmani emphasized that no tourists were harmed in this incident.

Surveillance footage released by the police showed the suspect wearing a white hat and carrying a backpack, pacing around the market’s parking lot.

Incidents of gun violence in Thai society have been frequent, causing significant concern. In October 2023, a 14-year-old boy committed a shooting at a luxury shopping center in Bangkok, resulting in 2 deaths and 5 injuries. Even earlier, in 2022, a former police officer carried out a shooting and stabbing attack at a kindergarten in the eastern region, claiming a total of 36 lives, including 22 children.

Thailand is the second-largest economy in Southeast Asia, with tourism being a crucial economic pillar. Although this incident did not impact tourists, such acts of violence could cast a shadow on the already fragile economic outlook.

Authorities have stated that they will continue to investigate the details and motives of the case and have urged the public to remain calm.
