Bangkok issues extreme heat warning, may feel like 52 degrees Celsius

On April 25, 2024, as temperatures soared in Thailand, authorities issued an extreme heat warning for the capital, Bangkok, urging people to prioritize their safety and stay indoors. Local forecasts predicted temperatures reaching 39 degrees Celsius, with a real feel possibly exceeding 52 degrees Celsius, classified as “extremely dangerous.”

According to Agence France-Presse, Bangkok, with its vast expanse, is forecasted to experience temperatures as high as 39 degrees Celsius, and the heat index could climb above 52 degrees Celsius, categorized by authorities as “extremely dangerous.”

The heat index, also known as the real feel temperature, takes into account factors such as humidity, wind speed, and other elements to gauge how hot it feels to the human body despite the actual external temperature.

On the 24th, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s environmental authority posted on Facebook: “Warning: Today’s heat index reaches ‘extremely dangerous.’ Please avoid outdoor activities. When the heat index surpasses 52 degrees Celsius, it is classified as extremely dangerous.”

April is typically the hottest and most humid period of the year in Thailand, with the situation exacerbated this year by the El Niño phenomenon.

Thailand has been hit by a heatwave this week, with temperatures in the northern Lampang province reaching 44.2 degrees Celsius on the 22nd, nearing the country’s all-time high temperature record of 44.6 degrees Celsius.
