August distribution schedule of US Social Security benefits released: When will you receive money?

In early August, millions of Americans who receive Social Security benefits are welcoming a new round of payments.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) distributes benefits on a regular monthly basis, but the specific date varies depending on the recipient’s birthdate. Those who applied for retirement, disability, or survivor (RSDI) benefits after May 1, 1997, are scheduled to receive payments on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of each month. Meanwhile, individuals who started receiving benefits before May 1997 have a fixed payment date.

Recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI), a monthly supplement provided to individuals with low income or no income due to disabilities or old age, can expect their electronic payments on the 1st of each month.

If the 1st falls on a weekend or a national holiday, payments are typically disbursed one business day earlier.

Below are the payment dates for different beneficiary groups in August, with payments possibly being issued one business day earlier in case of special circumstances.

– Beneficiaries receiving benefits before May 1997: August 1, 2025.

– Beneficiaries receiving benefits after May 1, 1997:

   – Birthdays between the 1st and 10th: August 13, 2025 (second Wednesday of the month).
   – Birthdays between the 11th and 20th: August 20, 2025 (third Wednesday of the month).
   – Birthdays between the 21st and 31st: August 27, 2025 (fourth Wednesday of the month).

As September 1, 2025, is Labor Day, SSI benefits for September will be issued at the end of August. Therefore, there will be two SSI payments in August: on August 1st and August 29th.

If a recipient does not receive their electronic payment on the scheduled date, the SSA advises them to contact their bank or financial institution first, as there may be processing delays on the bank’s end.

If the issue persists, individuals can call the SSA customer service hotline at 1-800-772-1213. For those with hearing impairments, a special TTY line is available at 1-800-325-0778. They can also reach out to their local SSA office for assistance.

The website states, “We will review cases, and if it is confirmed that a payment should have been issued but hasn’t been received, we will make the necessary adjustments and issue any back payments.”
