Audience Praises NTD Dance Competition: Contestants’ Performances are Excellent

The 11th “World Classical Chinese Dance Competition” finals concluded on September 14th at the Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center in Sugar Loaf, New York. The competition brought together the world’s top classical Chinese dance performers, showcasing their splendid interpretations that helped more people understand the beauty of Chinese classical dance. The performances not only provided visual enjoyment but also touched the hearts of the audience.

Tysan Learner, the owner of a fitness center called “Pilates Oasis” in Midtown Manhattan, has attended the NTD Classical Dance Competition for the third time. Comparing her experiences from 2005 and 2023, Learner noted the increasing level of excellence in the competition. She expressed, “Although it remains classical Chinese dance, the choreography and dancers’ skills have elevated. The performances are more diverse now, with increased technical difficulty.”

Learner further remarked, “Previously, the movements seemed slower, with more pauses and a showcase of various skills. But now, there is a stronger focus on choreography and high audience appeal.” She added, “Even though it’s a competition and each dance piece is short, it looks like a complete dance, and transitions are incredibly smooth and natural. I particularly love the choreography.” Learner stated.

“Performers are storytelling through dance,” Learner said, “With high-difficulty acrobatics seamlessly integrated, blending effortlessly with the narrative. Their movements appear so relaxed, giving me a feeling of immersion, involuntarily taking deep breaths as if I am dancing with them.”

One of the most impressive performers for Learner was Adam Parker from the youth male group. She praised his outstanding dance performance and perfect physique, with each movement executed flawlessly.

Learner admired a young male performer in the role of Cao Cao in the junior male group, saying, “Despite his young age, his portrayal of the character is powerful. Clad in a red robe with a fake beard, he was very engaging.”

Grace Rubacek’s smile deeply moved Learner, “That blonde female performer’s movements harmonized perfectly with the music. Her bright smile brought me great joy.”

With half Chinese heritage, Learner mentioned her ballet training since childhood, fueled by her mother’s background as a dance performer. She shared, “Prior to attending the NTD Dance Competition, I had never seen such rich content of Chinese classical dance.”

Learner reflected, “I used to believe ballet was the highest form of dance, but later discovered that classical Chinese dance truly deserves that title of the highest level of dance form.”

Learner felt fortunate to witness the competition and remarked, “People living nearby are indeed lucky. Having such a fantastic dance competition held in their area. By simply purchasing a ticket, they can watch many outstanding dance performers. Furthermore, as it is a competition, we get to see performances at different levels. Even within similar elements like leaps, subtle differences represent varying levels of skill.”

Lastly, Learner recommended everyone to experience Shen Yun performances, emphasizing, “I know many talented performers here aspire to join Shen Yun Performing Arts for their touring shows. While the competition is already impressive, compared to Shen Yun performances, it’s just a taste. Watch Shen Yun, and it will become one of the most precious experiences in your life.”

After witnessing the competition finals, former banker Linda Liu was excited, enthusiastically recounting the remarkable performances she witnessed. She expressed, “The dance piece ‘Brothers’ was so moving and realistic, depicting practitioners who uphold their faith amidst persecution, bringing tears to my eyes. Not just me, even male audience members in the front rows were seen wiping their eyes.”

Liu also highlighted a 13 and a half-year-old boy portraying an elderly man, marveling at his precise mimicry of gestures, even the minute actions like stroking his beard.

“At 13 years old, to have such skill is admirable. When I was 13, I had no idea what I was doing. There was also a 13-year-old female contestant from Taiwan, a champion in figure skating, who exhibited swift and sharp movements. Additionally, a contestant from Ukraine showcased remarkable spinning and acrobatic skills.”

Liu applauded the competition’s choreography, costumes, and props, noting the meticulous attention to detail.

Having participated in a summer camp for classical Chinese dance by chance, Liu gained a newfound appreciation for the art form. She stated, “I now particularly love classical Chinese dance. I’ve learned that bearing temperament, posture, and breath control are crucial. I observe the exceptional control each performer exhibits during the performance; their skills are top-notch!”

Serene Liu, aged 12, and Rose Flynn, aged 13, are young audience members learning dance. Serene Liu shared, “Watching today’s competition greatly inspired me. These performers not only display high dance skills but also deliver outstanding performances. They radiate a great energy that I truly admire.”

Flynn remarked, “I believe the actors display courage to try new things, no matter how difficult, they are willing to attempt it. They don’t care about winning or losing; they believe that giving their best effort is what matters. I admire their spirit of giving it their all.”

“I think they must be very patient during training,” expressed Flynn, who has been studying classical dance for three years. “When I practice solo dances at home, I lack patience and easily get frustrated. I believe these actors never complain about practice being too strenuous, nor do they become lazy. Because they aim to improve, they give their all.”

Becoming performers in Shen Yun is the dream of these two young girls. Flynn said, “I love dancing and hope that in the future, I can dance as beautifully as these performers.” Liu added, “I aspire to dance better and one day join Shen Yun Performing Arts, to tour the world with their shows.”
