Attending the Retort Society pilgrimage, Lai Ching-te calls for guarding Taiwan against Chinese Communist infiltration.

On February 4, 2025, President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Lai Ching-te attended the Chinese New Year gathering of the Veterans Affairs Council (VAC) of the Republic of China Armed Forces to encourage everyone to uphold integrity, diligence, professionalism, and care for the disadvantaged in society, by assisting and caring for veterans and their families. He also expressed his hope for unity in safeguarding the country and not succumbing to infiltration by the Chinese Communist Party.

President Lai, in his address, expressed his joy in joining the VAC for the New Year gathering, acknowledging and thanking the efforts of the VAC. Many veteran elders had participated in significant battles in the past, such as the Battle of Gu Ning Tou and the 823 Artillery Battle, courageously defending Taiwan and the Republic of China. Over the past few decades, they have contributed significantly to the nation by participating in major construction projects, for which he expressed gratitude to the veteran elders.

During his time as a legislator, President Lai had assisted the VAC in securing budgets. Furthermore, the government’s care for the military and veterans has increased, with the former President Tsai Ing-wen steadily raising the national defense budget and initiating various projects, such as the Military Barracks Renewal Project. He also urged everyone, regardless of party affiliation or ethnicity, to unite for the nation, for Taiwan, and for society.

President Lai encouraged VAC colleagues to uphold the spirit of integrity, diligence, professionalism, and care for the disadvantaged, ensuring the five key areas of education, employment, healthcare, support, and social services are well-implemented. Given Taiwan’s transition to an “ultra-aged society,” with veterans aged 65 and above accounting for 46.6%, he emphasized the VAC’s duty to care for veterans and their families in accordance with laws and regulations.

Moreover, President Lai expressed his hope for the preservation of the spirit of veterans and safeguarding the nation. During the 66th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of 823 in 2024, he encountered bereaved family members from various ethnic groups, all united in safeguarding the country as one family. He believed that anyone arriving in Taiwan, regardless of timing or ethnicity, who identifies with the land is its owner and the master of the nation. He urged for enhanced mutual understanding, unity in safeguarding the country, and resilience against penetration by the Chinese Communist Party.

Discussing his three missions as president, Lai stated, “First, I will continue to ensure the country’s survival and development, safeguarding sovereignty against encroachment and annexation. Second, protect the safety of people’s lives and property. Peace is priceless, and there are no winners in war; we must rely on strength to achieve peace. Third, develop economic resilience, maintain economic autonomy to avoid being controlled by others.”

President Lai emphasized the importance of aligning with the democratic camp, citing initiatives such as the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD), the AUKUS security partnership, and the Five Eyes Alliance, all aimed at maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. He highlighted that Taiwan, standing with the democratic camp, not only safeguards its own security but also contributes to maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. In conclusion, he wished VAC colleagues a successful and prosperous year of the Snake, symbolizing good fortune and prosperity.
