Atlanta International Airport Holiday Travelers Hit Record Numbers

Over the Memorial Day weekend, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport marked the beginning of a busy summer season. As the world’s busiest airport, it has already seen record-breaking passenger traffic. After screening a record 111,000 passengers on May 30th, the airport has now returned to its normal summer levels. Despite thunderstorms causing flight delays across the country, nearly 2.4 million people passed through the airport over the weekend.

Airport spokesperson Andrew Gobeil stated that the passenger traffic continues to remain close to pre-pandemic levels. “In 2019, we set a record by serving 110 million passengers before the pandemic,” he said. “We are approaching that number again. It is possible to come close to or even reach that figure this year.”

Last Friday, the airport also came close to setting a record for the number of screenings, but did not surpass the 111,000 screenings, making it the second busiest day in airport history. Gobeil expects the passenger traffic to remain high throughout the summer. “We could be very, very busy from May all the way to September,” he said. “But Memorial Day weekend, Independence Day weekend, and Labor Day weekend are usually even busier.”

It is expected that passenger traffic will once again decrease in the fall.
