At least 5 dead, 63 injured in gas tank explosion in western Turkey

Turkish authorities reported that a propane gas tank exploded at a restaurant in Izmir, western Turkey, on Sunday (June 30th), resulting in 5 deaths and 63 injuries.

Security cameras captured the explosion incident. The video shows debris scattered on the streets, with damage caused to surrounding buildings, some of which had their exterior walls destroyed.

According to the Associated Press, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced on social media that dozens of rescue personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Governor Suleyman Elban of Izmir visited the hospital to check on the injured, and announced that 40 people had already been discharged.

Authorities have detained a suspect who may be responsible for the incident. On Saturday, this suspect replaced the propane gas tank with a new one.
