At Home, a Texas-based furniture and home decor retailer, has announced its decision to close 29 “underperforming” stores across the United States by the end of the month. This move follows similar actions by major retailers such as Big Lots, Joann Fabrics, Kohl’s, JCPenney, Macy’s, and Party City. Among these closures, 8 stores in California will be shut down, followed by 3 each in New York and Illinois.
Established in 1979 and later rebranded in 2014, At Home currently operates 260 stores in 40 states, having closed 6 stores last year. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June this year citing economic pressures stemming from rising interest rates, persistent inflation, and increased costs due to tariffs.
Brad Weston, the CEO of At Home, expressed optimism about the restructuring plan, stating, “We are pleased to have reached this agreement with our lenders, marking a key and positive step in preparing At Home for future growth.”
As part of the bankruptcy filing in June, ownership of the company will transfer to hedge funds and other firms based in New York City and San Francisco. At Home has entered into a restructuring support agreement with these companies, which hold over 95% of the company’s debt, aiming to eliminate nearly $2 billion in financed debt and infuse $200 million in new capital.
The largest number of store closures in California will be in Northern California, including locations in San Jose, Chico, and Foothill Ranch; while Southern California will see closures in cities such as Pasadena, Long Beach, Costa Mesa, Tustin, and Foothill Ranch. However, other At Home stores in California, including those in San Diego, Riverside, and Temecula, will remain operational.
