Asian American Alliance Investigation: Asian Votes Determine Outcome of Congressional 3rd District

On Thursday, May 30th, the Asian American Federation (AAF) released a new report emphasizing the rapidly growing influence of Asian American voters in New York’s 3rd congressional district. The report highlights the need for political candidates to engage in detailed and culturally sensitive outreach activities to attract this segment of voters.

The report examined voting trends and patterns from the 2022 elections to the 2024 special elections, revealing that Asian Americans have become the fastest-growing racial group in this district, currently representing a significant portion of the electorate. It stressed that Asian American participation was crucial for the outcomes of the 2022 and 2024 elections in the 3rd district, showcasing their increasing political influence and civic engagement.

Using Congressman Tom Suozzi’s campaign team strategies in the 2024 special elections as an example, the report illustrated how their successful outreach to Asian American voters and increased voter turnout among this group ultimately led to Suozzi’s victory.

Furthermore, the report emphasized several key findings:

(1) Engaging with Asian American voters is critical for both parties, especially considering that 37% of voters are registered as independents and the narrow margin of votes in the 2022 and 2024 elections. Therefore, these voters have a decisive impact on the outcomes.

(2) Communities with a significant number of Chinese, Korean, and South Asian Americans show crucial support for candidates who actively and consistently engage in various voter-related issues.

The report also analyzed the reasons behind the “9 major shifts of Asian American voters from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party from 2022 to 2024” in the 3rd district.

“Over the years, the influence of the Asian American community in our country’s political process has been increasing. Unfortunately, many campaign teams still struggle to effectively communicate and educate Asian American voters,” said Jo-Ann Yoo, Executive Director of the Asian American Federation. “Campaign messaging that resonates with Asian cultures is not only helpful but crucial for any candidate seeking support from Asian American voters.”
