“Anita Mui’s 62nd Memorial Anniversary: Maggie Cheung Shares Short Film in Remembrance”

On October 10th, this year marked the 62nd birthday of the late Cantopop diva Anita Mui. Maggie Cheung, who had collaborated with Anita Mui on films such as “The Heroic Trio” and “The Myth,” paid tribute to her dear friend by filming a short video. During the process, Maggie Cheung couldn’t hold back her tears while praising Anita Mui as the “daughter of Hong Kong.”

Maggie Cheung, who returned to Hong Kong from England at the age of 17 to visit family, was discovered by talent scouts in Hong Kong at the time. In the video, she recounted how she got to know Anita Mui while filming her second movie, “Rouge.” She emotionally exclaimed, “Back then, we were just young girls!” Anita Mui won the Best Supporting Actress award at the Hong Kong Film Awards for her role in that film.

Recalling their time together, Maggie Cheung described Anita Mui as generous, straightforward, and someone who wore her heart on her sleeve. It was years after their collaboration on “Rouge” that they truly became friends, and their bond deepened over time. “Although she was only one year older than me, she always felt like a big sister to me,” Maggie reminisced.

Anita Mui succumbed to cancer at the end of 2003 at the age of 40. While editing the video, Maggie Cheung revisited many memorable moments they shared, leading to tears rolling down her cheeks.

Maggie Cheung revealed that her only regret in her friendship with Anita Mui was not having a formal goodbye before Anita’s passing. She recalled their last meeting when Anita hugged her and said, “Maggie, you must come to my birthday party this year.” Unfortunately, due to work commitments outside Hong Kong, Maggie couldn’t make it back. Reflecting on this missed opportunity, she expressed sorrow over realizing it was their final encounter.

In conclusion, Maggie Cheung affectionately called out Anita Mui’s English name and stated, “To this day, she still lives in my heart, and I often miss her. Because she wasn’t just Hong Kong’s most beloved and greatest female singer, she was my forever good friend, Anita!”
