In celebration of Mother’s Day, the American Chinese Women’s Association announced on April 19th that they will be hosting the 6th annual “Outstanding Mothers and Elderly Appreciation Party” on May 9th at the Grand Hotel Ballroom.
President Xie Jiayan expressed that as Mother’s Day approaches, it is important to remember the special mothers who have children with disabilities. These mothers work tirelessly to care for their children, often facing economic hardships, and greatly need the care and encouragement of society and the community. The event will invite these “extraordinary mothers” with special children, as well as some elders, to attend. 20 “Outstanding Mothers” will be honored at the event, each receiving a gift of $800.
The event first took place in 2016, but was paused for three years during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. It was reinstated last year with 550 attendees, creating a grand and touching scene. In addition to the 50 “extraordinary mothers” and 50 elders, there were also 50 sponsored guests.
Xie Jiayan shared that the touching stories of last year’s awarded mothers moved many guests to tears. One grandmother in her 70s, who survives by collecting bottles, raises her five-year-old grandchild with special needs all on her own. She received red envelope donations from the attendees on the spot. Another mother used the $800 gift to buy a computer for her child, something the child had always wanted.
Furthermore, the event will also present some parents with the “Special Service to the Community Award” for their dedication in sharing experiences on how to apply for social welfare and job opportunities for special children. They help create a good interactive platform for other parents, providing timely assistance and information to each other.
Chen Yongfeng, the director of the Overseas Chinese Cultural and Educational Service Center, praised the event for “bringing the power of kindness together” and thanked the American Chinese Women’s Association for their love and care for special families.
Advisors Li Jinbiao (Honorary Chairman of the Greater New York Emergency Relief Association), He Taihua (former president of the Chinese-American Chamber of Commerce), Xie Cuiping; Vice Presidents Feng Zixin, Yan Ying, as well as the exemplary honorary mother Zhu Ruoyu, attended the press conference.
