The US federal agency has announced a recall of over 200,000 Power Banks sold on Amazon due to defects that have led to 11 fires and injuries. The recalled product is the INIU brand’s 10000mAh Power Bank, model BI-B41. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) stated that the lithium-ion batteries in the Power Banks may overheat and pose a fire and burn hazard to consumers.
The Power Banks being recalled have black or blue casings with the INIU logo and claw mark LED indicator on the front. The model and serial numbers are printed on the bottom of the back of the Power Bank. The recall only affects Power Banks with the serial numbers 000G21, 000H21, 000I21, and 000L21.
According to the CPSC, these products were sold on Amazon.com from August 2021 to April 2022 for around $18. The manufacturer is Topstar Limited Company based in Shenzhen, China, and the brand is INIU headquartered in Seattle, USA.
Officials stated that INIU has received reports of 15 cases of Power Banks overheating, 11 fires, and three cases resulting in minor burns. The fires caused by the batteries have also led to property damage totaling $380,000.
Consumers are warned not to dispose of the recalled lithium-ion batteries or devices in regular trash cans, recycling bins, or retailer and home improvement store battery recycle bins. The CPSC advises that these batteries must be handled differently due to the increased risk of fire. Household hazardous waste (HHW) collection centers in your city may accept these batteries or devices for proper disposal.
The notice also instructs consumers to stop using the recalled Power Banks immediately. They are advised to visit INIU’s recall webpage at https://iniushop.com/pages/recall-b41# to verify the product’s serial number and register for a full refund.
