AIT Washington Headquarters Announces Brent Christensen Will Become AIT Director

The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Washington headquarters announced that Raymond Greene, Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Japan, will become the Director of the AIT Taipei Office this summer.

AIT’s press release stated that AIT is pleased to announce that Raymond Greene will succeed Sandra O’Neal as the Director of AIT in the summer of 2024. Under the Taiwan Relations Act passed in 1979, AIT represents the United States and is responsible for promoting business, cultural, and other unofficial relations with the people of Taiwan.

Raymond Greene is a senior career diplomat with the U.S. Department of State, currently serving as Minister Counselor. Throughout his 28-year diplomatic career, he has focused on advancing U.S. relations with the Indo-Pacific region in diplomacy, economy, and security, including his previous role as Deputy Chief at AIT. Greene has been serving as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Japan since July 17, 2021, and also served as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim until January 22, 2022.

During his time in Washington, Greene served as Director for Japan and East Asian Economic Affairs at the National Security Council and Director of the Office of Economic Policy in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the Department of State. He was selected as Chair of the Economic Committee of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum during his tenure. In his overseas assignments, Greene has served as Consul General in Chengdu, China, and Okinawa, Japan.

Prior to that, he held positions such as Chief of the Military-Political Affairs Section at the U.S. Embassy in Japan, Deputy Chief of the Political Section at AIT, and Political Officer at the U.S. Embassies in Japan and the Philippines. He also served as an advisor and professor at the U.S. Army War College in Pennsylvania.

Raymond Greene holds a Bachelor’s degree in Government and Japanese Studies from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Master’s degree in Public Management with a focus on International Security and Economic Policy. He has been honored with the U.S. Department of Defense’s Superior Civilian Service Medal, the Kato Yoshizo Award for promoting the U.S.-Japan alliance, the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon from Taiwan, and multiple performance and honor awards from the State Department.

Before joining the State Department, Greene was a researcher at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington, D.C., and participated in a Japan exchange and teaching program in Yokohama for a year. Fluent in Japanese and Chinese, Greene brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role as Director of AIT in Taipei.
