AIT Director W. Brent Christensen: U.S. Promises to Enhance Taiwan’s Security

Recently, Raymond Greene, the Director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) in Taipei, paid visits to Vice Premier of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Chen Li-jiun and Minister of Economic Affairs Kuo Chih-hui. Greene reiterated that the United States is committed to enhancing Taiwan’s security and cooperation to expand international participation. He was pleased to see the ongoing enhancement of exchanges in various fields between the two sides.

AIT posted on its official Facebook page today, stating that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during a joint press conference at the Japan-U.S.-Philippines Diplomatic and Defense Ministerial “2+2” dialogue, emphasized that on the issue of Taiwan, countries around the world are committed to ensuring peace and stability to maintain the status quo. “Fifty percent of global container shipments pass through the Taiwan Strait every day, and seventy percent of semiconductors worldwide are manufactured in Taiwan. It is widely recognized that if a crisis occurs in the region, everyone will be affected.”

Greene reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to enhancing Taiwan’s security, assisting in deepening Taiwan’s resilience, and cooperating to expand international participation. Greene expressed support and confidence in the growing economic and investment relationship between the U.S. and Taiwan, and was pleased to see the continued advancement of technology, cultural, and people-to-people exchanges between the two sides.

Earlier, AIT mentioned that Greene met President Tsai Ing-wen on July 10, marking his first meeting with President Tsai since assuming the position of AIT Director. They discussed a wide range of issues related to the U.S.-Taiwan partnership. In his opening remarks to President Tsai, Greene said: “I am honored to have this opportunity to work with you and your team at this crucial time to advance U.S.-Taiwan relations.”

Greene emphasized, “While the United States and Taiwan face increasingly complex challenges, our longstanding partnership continues to strengthen. I am confident that with the support of the global democratic community, we can safeguard Taiwan’s democracy, promote prosperity for both the U.S. and Taiwan, and elevate our relationship to a new level.”
